Circle vs Jatra: Which Fits Your Community?

Circle is built for paid courses and memberships. Jatra is built for business communities that should be found on Google. An honest comparison from someone who ran a community on Circle.

In June 2022, at Gumlet, we launched a community for video developers on Circle. It looked great. Members liked it. And for months, almost nothing happened.

I've told the full story in the best Circle alternatives, so here's the short version: Google barely indexed our content, a Search Console query we raised with Circle went unanswered for weeks, and we moved to Discourse. That experience is one of the reasons I built Jatra.

So yes, I'm biased. I run Jatra. But I'll be straight with you: Circle is the better choice for a lot of people. This article is about telling which one fits your community.

The short answer

Pick Circle if your community is a product you sell: a paid membership, a course, a coaching program. Circle has native courses, paywalls and branded mobile apps, and it's polished.

Pick Jatra if your community is part of how your business grows: customers asking and answering questions, content people find on Google, and you'd like help building it, not just software.

If you're not sure which one you are, ask yourself one question: do you want strangers to find your community through search? If the answer is yes, keep reading.

Where Circle is better

Courses. Circle's course delivery is the most polished I've seen in this category, with drip schedules and completion tracking built in. Jatra is building courses, but they aren't ready, and I won't pretend otherwise.

Mobile apps and payments. If your members live on their phones and you want your own branded app, Circle Plus gives you that. Circle also has native checkout for paid memberships. Jatra doesn't yet: you link to your own checkout page.

Speed to launch. You can have a working Circle community in an afternoon. Members find it easy to use, and creators love it for good reason.

If you're selling a $50 to $300 a month membership to people who already follow you, Circle is very hard to beat. Stay there.

Where Jatra is better

Getting found. When we audited public Circle communities in May 2026, the page title and description were in the HTML Google first receives, but the post text wasn't. The browser builds it afterwards with JavaScript. Google can render JavaScript, but it does it later and less reliably, and many AI crawlers don't do it at all. On Jatra, every public discussion is in the page the server sends, so search engines and AI tools can read it straight away.

That matters more than people think. Back at CrazyEngineers, installing a single SEO plugin in 2009 lifted our traffic by almost 40% in a week. Same content, same members. The software decides how much of your community Google can see.

More than one kind of content. A customer community needs more than posts. It needs questions with accepted answers, articles, a feedback board, a changelog, maybe a jobs board. On Circle, each space holds one type of content, and there's no native Q&A, feedback board or changelog. On Jatra, they all live in one place, on your domain.

A writing experience members enjoy. Recent releases added a rebuilt writing editor with GIF search, an image maker, image captions and alt text, link preview cards and videos that play in the feed, plus threaded replies, six emoji reactions that show who reacted, direct messages with replies and images, and one email digest of unread notifications. Admins get a full-screen theme studio that builds a theme in three steps with a live preview, starting from eight built-in designs with Google font pairings, and lets you export a theme as a file to reuse in another community.

Help, not just software. Most communities don't fail because of the platform. They fail because nobody has time to run them. That's why every Jatra plan includes working sessions with us and migration support. On Circle, strategy help is part of Circle Plus, their custom-priced tier.

Moving from Circle to Jatra

If you're already on Circle, here's what to expect. Circle lets you export members, posts (text only, no images) and comments as CSV files, and its API is available on the Business plan and above. Images stay on Circle's servers, and passwords don't move, so every member resets their login on the new platform.

The biggest risk is your URLs. If your community runs on your own domain, we map every old Circle URL to its new home with a 301 redirect, so you keep what you've earned in search. I wrote a full guide on moving from Circle to Jatra. Migration is included on annual plans, and on monthly plans we agree the scope case by case.

Who should stay on Circle

I'll say it again because it matters: if your community is a paid course or membership, and Google isn't how people find you, stay on Circle. You'd be giving up courses and apps for search visibility you don't need.

If your community is meant to bring in new customers, answer their questions in public and grow without you pushing it every day, that's the job I built Jatra for. Book a call and bring your Circle setup. If staying put is the better answer for you, I'll tell you.

A note from the founder

I write from the work, not the sidelines.

I'm Kaustubh Katdare. I've been building online communities since 2005, from growing CrazyEngineers to hundreds of thousands of members to creating Jatra. These articles draw on the work I still do myself: auditing platforms, planning migrations, protecting years of searchable knowledge, and helping community teams build something people want to return to.
